Oregon has 1st coronavirus case: elementary school employee <\/a><\/h3>\n

SALEM, Ore. (AP) \u2014 Oregon\u2019s first coronavirus case emerged on Friday, and the infected person worked at an elementary school in the Portland area, which will be temporarily closed, authorities said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe case was not a person under monitoring or a person under investigation. The individual had neither a history of travel to a country where the virus was circulating, nor is believed to have had a close contact with another confirmed case \u2014 the two most common sources of exposure,\u201d the Oregon Health Authority said in a statement.<\/p>\n

UPDATE, 5:37 p.m.: DHHS spokesperson Christine Messinger tells the Outpost that the Humboldt County person who has been diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus had traveled to mainland China.<\/p>\n

The Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services Public Health Branch has received confirmation from the California Department of Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of one case of COVID-19 in a Humboldt County resident. A close contact who has symptoms is being tested as well.<\/p>\n

This marks the first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus in Humboldt County. Presently, the ill individuals are doing well and self-isolating at home, while being monitored for symptoms by the Public Health Communicable Disease Surveillance and Control Unit.<\/p>\n

Close contacts of these individuals will also be quarantined at home and monitored for symptoms by Public Health staff. With the amount of foreign travel by county residents, including travel to China, it is not surprising that a case has emerged locally. Additional cases may occur either in returning travelers or their close contacts.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important to remember that the risk to the general public remains low at this time,\u201d said Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich. \u201cDespite the fact that Humboldt County now has a confirmed case of COVID-19, there is no evidence to suggest that novel coronavirus is circulating in the community at large.\u201d<\/p>\n

Frankovich added that transmission in the U.S. to date has been among close contacts and not among the general public.<\/p>\n

China lab seeks patent on use of Gilead’s coronavirus treatment<\/a><\/h3>\n

BEIJING\/SHANGHAI (Reuters) – A state-run Chinese research institute has applied for a patent on the use of Gilead Sciences\u2019 experimental U.S. antiviral drug, which scientists think could provide treatment for the coronavirus that has killed hundreds and infected thousands.<\/p>\n

The Wuhan Institute of Virology of the China Academy of Sciences, based in the city where the outbreak is believed to have originated, said in a statement on Tuesday it applied to patent the use of Remdesivir<\/strong>, an antiviral drug developed by Gilead (GILD.O<\/a><\/span>), to treat the virus.<\/p>\n

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine last week reported a coronavirus patient in the United States was found to show an improvement after taking Remdesivir, which is also used to treat infectious diseases such as Ebola.<\/p>\n

\nSAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) — The Bay Area’s first case of the coronavirus from China has been confirmed in Santa Clara County, officials say.<\/p>\n

The CDC says an adult male resident tested positive for the new coronavirus. He has been self-isolating since he returned from a trip to Wuhan on Jan. 24, officials say.<\/p>\n

He has not been hospitalized and has not been very sick. He’s currently being treated as an outpatient and has come into contact with very few individuals since he’s been home, officials say.<\/p>\n

Santa Clara County health officials say the patient will remain in self-quarantine at home while investigators begin to make contact with anyone with whom the patient came in contact.<\/p>\n
